Advanced footcare is a nursing service focused on the assessment, prevention, and management of foot and lower-limb concerns within the practitioner's individual scope of practice, education, authorization, and competence.
An individualized foot and lower-limb assessment is completed before treatment to identify the client's foot-care needs, relevant health factors, risk factors, and suitability for the proposed care.

Where appropriate, a brief foot soak may be provided to cleanse and prepare the feet for subsequent footcare. The soak is an adjunct to the footcare service and is provided only when appropriate based on the client's assessment, skin condition, circulation, sensation, health status, and treatment needs.

Advanced footcare may include appropriate management of nails, calluses, corns, and other foot-care concerns that fall within the practitioner's education, competence, and authorized scope of practice. Treatment may be modified, deferred, or discontinued when assessment identifies a contraindication, unexpected finding, or concern requiring further assessment or referral.

Following completion of the footcare, cosmetic gel-polish application may be offered as a separate, optional service when appropriate. Gel polish is a cosmetic service and does not form part of the nursing assessment or treatment. It will only be applied when the condition of the nails and surrounding skin is suitable for cosmetic polish.

Appropriate infection-prevention and control practices, equipment cleaning and reprocessing procedures, informed consent, documentation, client education, and follow-up processes are used for the nursing care provided. Cosmetic products and equipment are used according to manufacturer instructions and applicable safety requirements.

Cosmetic gel polish is not used to cover, conceal, or treat wounds, infection, abnormal nail findings, or other conditions requiring assessment or treatment.
